BSSA Skeet Championship

The BSSA Championship dawned on the 12th July 2008. It looked like the weather was going to play a huge part in this event as it did at the UK championship. The forecast was "cats & dog's" or if you would prefer "stair rods", thankfully the rain storm hit Lakenheath early hours of the morning. Wind was a little gusty but no rain. Job's a good one, game on.

The twelve gauge was the first dual. Marsden, Hill, Barr, Brister, Webb, Morris, Tullett, Lock, DP and Bloomers all shot 98's. Lackers, Frammingham, Smithy and the Dore were just one away and the only two straights came from Wobbley Walker and Dave Morgan.

Dave Morgan was Champ, Runner Up was Wobbley Walker, with AA finishing Lackers, Smithy and Trevor Frammingham in that order.

Second event was the 28 gauge. Again there were a few that got close, DP, Marsden and Morris were two away. Lackers and Bloomers one away with only one ton in the 28 from Nick Coupe.

Nick was Champ, Bloomers was R/U with AA finishing Lackers, DP and Marsden in that order.

Would the weather hold?

Sunday dawned with clear and bright skies with no wind. Expectations were high. 20 gauge was first up and finished with eight 99's, no tons. The Mr Whippey shoot off started. My only concern was the projected cost of the shoot off clays, my life already.

Bloomers was Champ, and Simon Hill R/U. Marsden Morgan and Coupe finished in that order for AA. Andrew McNamara was A1 with Smithy A2 both again with 99's.

I think the wind picked up just slightly for the .410, but the conditions were still very manageable for the little gun. No one really mastered the peanut bender and it finished with Nick Marsden Champ, Nick Coupe R/U, with AA finishing Lackers, Bloomers and the Dore.

The HOA Champ after a shoot off was Nick Coupe and R/U Nick Marsden.

Catherine Marsden was Lady Champ. John Batchelor Veteran Champion (someone should tell John he is old at 78 and slow him down a bit). Mick Rolestone was Rookie Champion.

A big thank you to all the referees and indeed those shooters that gave the ref's a break here and there due to this championships large entry.

This BSSA was one of the best attended for many years. 49 X 12 gauge, 42 X 28 gauge, 45 X 20 gauge and 41 X .410. Four gun HOA shooters amounted to 38 with 177 individual entries. Most important, the atmosphere was brilliant, everyone was smiling and it was just great to see the fun back at a BSSA Championship.
